The Okhotsk area has the best output of scallops in Japan, and especially Tokoro is famous for the town of scallops. In this area, scallop fishing is integrated from juvenile shellfish production to food production. Juvenile shellfish are produced in Lake Saroma and Lake Notoro to be supplied to the scallop farming industry in the Tohoku district and other parts of Hokkaido. These skills of farming were developed in 1950s to 1960s (Showa 30s to 40s).
